Li-Ion and Ni-Poly batteries are the most advanced and last longer. So try for one of these two technologies. Some laptops are designed to use the kind of battery it originally came fitted with, this means if it came with a Ni-Cad battery it must be replaced with a Ni-Cad battery. This is because the internal circuit of the battery must match the laptop hardware for optimum charging and discharging. However, this is not always the case so check with your manufacturer of the laptop if the battery can be interchangeable.

Finally you must study the power ratings of the battery you are buying. Batteries are growing smaller and the power capacity is increasing. Batteries have two ratings marked on them. One will be the voltage and the other Amperes. When buying your replacement battery buy one with the same voltage rating as the old one but try to get a battery with a higher ampere rating. This battery will have longer charge cycles.

Many batteries are rated in watt-hours. This is perhaps the simplest way to rate a battery. The wattage of a battery is calculated by multiplying the voltage by the amperage so a battery with a 14.4 volt rating and an ampere rating of 3600mAh (3.6 Amps) will have a watt rating of 51.84 watts (14.4X3.6 = 51.84).

If the power rating on the battery reads 51.84 watt-hours it means that the battery can supply 1 watt of power continuously for 51.84 hours or 51.84 watts of power for one hour or any combination of the two. No suppose your laptop runs on 17.28 watts (which is pretty unlikely) a 51.84 watt battery will power it for 3 hours. SO divide the power ratings in watts of the battery by the watts of your laptop to see how long the battery will run your laptop.

Sometimes the power ratings in volts and amps on a battery vary. For instance a laptop that runs on a Li-Ion 14.4 Volt, 3600mAh battery may be able to run on a Ni-MH battery with a 9.6 Volt, 4000mAh rating. The Li-Ion battery will be stronger even though the amperage ratings are lower. Here is why:

Li-Ion: 14.4 volts multiplied by 3.6 amps will deliver 51.84 watt hours of power and a Ni-MH battery will deliver 38.4 watt hours of power because 9.6 Volts multiplied by 4 amps will equal 38.4 watt hours. Naturally the Li-Ion battery should be your choice for a replacement battery.

I’m not a military weapons developer or anything, but surely I can come up with plenty of ways to develop this technology into making warfare–how should I say it?– more “efficient.” Imagine soldiers guiding their bullets to pinpoint locations with a simple staredown. Or what if humans develop such a dependency on this type of technology that we stop using our own limbs altogether? That would certainly defeat the whole purpose of this thought-based technology’s conception. In the end, we’ll suffer even more from committing the sin of Sloth, then we’d all be cast down to hell. You never know.

Talk to most people about a notebook, and they think you're talking about a small computer. And whilst, I appreciate the ideal of a super slim, super small laptop, to me they will never be notebooks. The time has come to reclaim the word notebook from the technology fiends, and return it to its rightful place as something with paper that you write in with a pen.

I know it's old fashioned, but I like pen and paper, in particularly, I like notebooks. I have a large collection of notebooks, some full, some empty, some half used ? the ratio is pretty even. My favourite notebooks feel substantial in the hand, and have blank shiny paper ? the sort of paper the pen glides across like a figure skater performing perfect pirouettes.

Being a writer, people seem to think notebooks are a perfect gift for me, and I've been given some beautiful ones over the years. However, I've never had the heart to tell anyone that I'd rather choose my own. Whilst shorter ones may only last a couple of months, larger ones are a six month minimum, and that's a big commitment.

My relationship with my notebook is a personal one. I am quick to leave if I don't feel things are working early on. I've tried having a bit of stamina, but I find it stilts me creatively. If I don't want to use the book, I don't write. Sadly, it really is that simple.

Different notebooks perform different functions. I have one overall, general book. This is usually small enough to fit in most bags and contains everything from shopping lists, to blog entries, music I've liked and short stories. It's the fall back notebook for all eventualities.

Then I have a planning notebook where I work through ideas. This is bigger and has to have blank pages to enable me to draw diagrams and write at funny angles. However, I am allowed to write whatever I wish in this book, apart from to-do lists which have to go in the general notebook.

I also have a diary/journal. I'm not sure why I have this as I normally write any relevant entries in either the general or planning books. This is a logistical problem. It is supposed to be a mood diary, so I've kept it by the bed, in the theory I can update it every evening. However, this is not the time I generally want to write journal entries, so I end up using the books I do have with me.

Additionally, there are the sporadic notebooks. The ones started when I suddenly have a great idea warranting its own notebook, but rarely maintained for longer than a couple of months. For example, I have a dream book which I haven't updated for several years.

Is it just me? Hopefully not. Hopefully there's a band of people out there willing to stand and be counted, ready to reclaim notebooks for the humble pen and paper. But I have to admit that I wrote the final version of this article on a laptop/notebook. Maybe it's the mix of old fashioned writing ideas down by hand and the fast word processing qualities of a notebook that make my writing an all-round enjoyable experience.

8. Avoid Overexposed pictures

On sunny days, find a shady spot to photograph your subjects and use the flash which will cast an even light over your subject. Take advantage of overcast days to avoid shadows. When indoors, provide as much natural light as possible to avoid using the flash which may wash out colors and cast harsh shadows. Avoid the midday sun, early morning and late evenings are better times for photography.

9. Avoid Red Eye

Turn off your camera's flash or if it's too dark to go without a flash, ask your subject to look toward the camera, but not directly at the lens. By taking daytime photos, you may eliminate the need for a flash. Bring in additional light sources if needed. Try stand further away from your subject. If you try all this and still have red eye, try using Photoshop to edit your photograph.

10. Avoid Blurry Photos

Avoid shutter lag by pressing the button halfway down before you shoot your photo. When you are ready to take the shot, press all the way down to instantly capture the desired photograph. Use a tripod or brace yourself against a stationary object to hold the camera still. If your subject is moving, use the Action mode on your camera. The Action setting automatically optimizes the shutter speed to capture the action.

The new version of the XO laptop, which was designed for schoolchildren in developing countries, has been revealed.

The new computer, which is called the XO2, looks just like an e-book. It also has a significantly lower price of just $75 per device, which is at least $25 cheaper than the first version.

Nicholas Negroponte, who founded the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) project that created this laptop, revealed the new version of the device at a special event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. It is thought that the first XO2 machines should be ready to deliver to children in developing countries by 2010.

At the event, Professor Negroponte said that he hoped other manufacturers would use the unusual design of the XO2, too. He said: "This laptop comes from a different point of view." He also added, "Over the last couple of years we've learned the book experience is key… It is a totally new concept for learning devices."

The XO2 doesn't feature the distinctive green rubbery keyboard of the first XO laptop, but it uses a single square display with a hinge instead. The hinge allows the device to be split into two separate touch screens, which can make the device look like a laptop with keyboard or the pages of a book.

The XO2 machine will also be more energy efficient than its predecessor, as well as being half the size of it and much lighter to carry.

Professor Negroponte said the new Laptop "will be a bit of a Trojan horse" and it will initially be promoted as an e-book reader that is able to store more than 500 e-books. He said: "Currently developing nations such as China and Brazil are spending $19 per student per year on books."

Many countries were initially reluctant to buy the original XO machines because they did not run on Microsoft's Windows operating system. However, One Laptop Per Child announced a deal with Microsoft to make Windows available on the XO machine in May. Professor Negroponte also announced that the project's Get-One-Give-One programme would soon open to people in North America and Europe. The scheme, which allows people in more affluent countries to buy two XO laptops and donate one to a child in a developing country, has already enabled One Laptop Per Child to distribute 30,000 laptops to children in Rwanda, Mongolia and Haiti.

ATEX is a European directive; it came into force in 2003 to ensure that companies that work with potentially explosive materials have adequate safety measures to prevent fire and explosion. Amazingly, industry analysts suggest that less than half of all companies that are required to abide by the ATEX directive even know what it is.

It is not just chemical or arms manufacturers either that should be aware of ATEX but also industries like food manufacturing as most powdered foods including custard, flour, sugar, coffee and dried milk all has the potential to cause explosions.

ATEX (137) recognises three zones for both dust and vapour explosions. For dust, zone 20 is the highest risk zone where an explosive cloud of dust could potentially ignite at any time, whilst zone 21 has less potential for explosions and zone 22 is the least likely. For vapours the zones are 0, 1 and 2 with zone 0 having the most potential for an explosion.

All companies that possibly have an area that is governed by a zone needs to be risk assessed and any equipment that falls short of the directive’s requirement should be replaced.

Whilst most companies may be quite aware of the potential explosive nature of their environments (the material safety data sheet MSDS should have been issued with any potentially hazardous material) many companies are unaware of the standards equipment needs to face when operating in certain zones, particularly in the food industry where it is not uncommon for a lot of older equipment to still be in use.

Also, a lot of factories that have recently computerised their procedures or upgraded their IT may be unaware of the potential risks their PCs may cause.

Computers of course are full of circuit boards that can easily short (particularly in dusty areas where dust itself can settle between contacts) and create a spark and if there happens to be a cloud of dust suddenly evacuated from a particular machine or process at that time; then boom!

In environments identified as ATEX zones 0, 1, 20 and 21, then computers need to be replaced by intrinsically safe or air-purged systems, however even in environments where an explosion is not that likely, such as zone 2, a coincidental spark from a PC could end not just your production line but possibly somebody’s life too.

These machines could of course be replaced too but many companies feel the expense for what is really only a slight risk is not justified, despite what the ATEX directive orders.

However, there are alternatives. Speciality industrial PC enclosures that can house computers, monitors, printers and all peripheries, are available that meet requirements of ATEX Zone 2.

Apart from being a lot cheaper than specifically designed systems, these computer enclosures have the add advantage of allowing you to keep you existing IT and replace it whenever you like whilst keeping the same enclosure.

ATEX has only been in force for the last 5 years (and only two for equipment in use before 2003) but it is only a matter of time before the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) cracks down and starts prosecuting companies for failing to adhere to the directive. Although a great big fine is probably preferable to your production line being blown apart due to faulty electrical equipment!

Our offices have been using a dual monitor setup for a number of years now. While I do not need any extensive research to tell me that I am vastly increasing our productivity (I can see it myself everyday), there are several studies that are coming out that are promoting the advantages of dual monitors.

In a recent study from the University of Utah, people using two 20-inch monitors were 44% faster than those that used a single 18-inch monitor. Microsoft Researchers conducted user studies at determining the effectiveness of adding a second monitor to their workstations. Their findings report that dual monitors increased productivity anywhere from 9% to 50% depending upon the person performing the tasks and the type of task.

I have been to numerous tax and accounting conferences and in the technology portion, dual monitors is always the strongest point of emphasis that is made. There are always the usual doubters – people that have been doing things the same way for 40 years and refuse to change anything. There are two additional things that are always consistent in these discussions. The first thing is that there is never anyone in the room who has gone to dual monitors that will not rave about them. Secondly, there is not a single dual monitor user in the room that will EVER let you take their dual monitors away from them – me included. I hope to have three monitors before long!

The One Laptop Per Child Project (OLPC) has reportedly received a boost from corporate gorilla, Microsoft. The original project was started by Nicholas Negroponte (yes, that’s his name) in hopes to bring user technology to better educate children in third world countries such as Afghanistan, Rwanda, Mexico, Peru, Uruguay, Mongolia, Birmingham.

Laptops that supposedly costs only $100 each were set to run with a custom educational interface called Sugar. However, recently, and after many months of corporate dealings, Microsoft is coming on board and is engineering XO’s (the name of the laptop) which run with a version of Windows.

Microsoft’s and OLPC’s story has been a rather confusing one. At the birth of the project Negroponte’s proposal of the XO running with Windows was said to have been rejected due to the XO’s lack of processing power and tiny screen. After that, Negroponte looked to Linux to help run his Sugar interface. He stressed that since Linux is a free software, it is detrimental in order to produce relatively cheap laptops. But somehow, in a strange twist of fate, Microsoft comes back with a version of the XO running with Windows. It might have cost a little more ($188), however, Negroponte now has the backing of one of the largest corporations in the world. Negroponte proposes that eventually the XO will feature a “dual boot” option, so the kids would be able to use either Linux or Windows for an extra $10.

While all this may seem like good news, many people have to come to question Negroponte’s so-called philanthropy. From what started out as a $100 laptop, it is almost twice as much as it is today. At the start of the project Negroponte was said to often mention that “the OLPC is an education project. It is not a laptop project.” Now, Ivan Kristic–a former security developer for the laptop group commented on Negroponte in a recent e-mail stating, “OLPC changed its mission outright, and in the most ill-conceived way imaginable.” Oh well, it seems that money really makes the world go round.

Currently, as reported in Newsbeet.com, the OLPC’s Sugar software has announced that it is going to be developed independently in hopes to “advance its development even further.” Who knows what other twist of fate is in store for the project? Hopefully it doesn’t end up as being a $500 laptop project in the future.

If you're bilingual, like me, and work on your PC, Mac, or laptop with more than one language, you're probably frustrated with having a single language keyboard. I mean, you can easily download another language to your computer, but if you don't know where the letters of the new language reside on your keyboard, you're practically lost.

This feeling of loss is especially true if your language is Arabic, Russian, Hebrew, or Chinese, which has characters which are wildly different than those of English.

Up until recently, the popular solution for this problem would have been to use keyboard language stickers, whether Arabic, Russian, or Hebrew stickers, whichever language you're using. The basic thing was to buy letter stickers, place each on the right key (so that when hitting each key, your computer will show the right letter), and start working. The main problems with these stickers are these:

Keyboard stickers tend to fall apart after a while, leaving a mess on the keyboard

It's hard to get these stickers straight on the keyboard

You need to replace all these language stickers once in a while

It makes your keyboard look ugly and unprofessional

Overall, keyboard language stickers have multiple disadvantages.

Everybody is now aware of the growing problem of identity theft; it is a huge global problem. All personal information is incredibly valuable to criminals who can use it to open bank accounts, get credit cards, loans, state benefits and documents such as passports and driving licences.

Some companies including banks and hospitals are now ensuring their computer hard drives are completely destroyed after use due to many new Government mandates forcing the protection of people’s personal data.

However, all these measures are futile if the PC itself gets stolen; along with the hard drive and all your personal files and those of your customers. Yet it is estimated that a million PCs and laptops are stolen globally each year exposing personal details of hundreds of thousands of people.

Having a computer stolen also has a cost, not just the money you spent on buying it or the money to replace it. There is the inconvenience to you, your staff, your company, the loss of records and the possible loss of business.

Over just the last three years it is thought that 150 million personal records have been stolen, that is twice the entire population of Great Britain. Hospitals are amongst the most vulnerable of places where reception areas or administration buildings are often left unattended. At the beginning of 2008, 88,000 people had to be notified when a hospital PC was stolen from Staten Island, New York along with all their personal details. In fact McAfee and Datamonitor’s Data Loss Survey, 2007 suggest a data breach that exposes personal information on average costs companies $268,000 (£136,000) to inform their customers, even if that lost data is never used, a third of companies surveyed also said a major security breach could put them out of business.

And Britain’s Metropolitan Police force is now issuing guidelines recommending that companies: “Anchor equipment to solid furniture, floors or nearby wall…and…store computer equipment within secure rooms/cabinets when buildings are unoccupied.”

But it is not just businesses and public buildings that have to think of computer theft. Home users are increasingly using computers for Internet banking and financial transactions, alongside the storing of personal files such as photographs. Whilst insurance will cover the cost of losing a computer and I’m sure you have backed-up all your files (haven’t you?) but what about your bank account details, conveniently stored on the machine for any crook to access.

Fortunately some companies have identified the problem and low cost PC safes have now been developed that can house PCs securely whilst still allowing users to access them. These safes are tamper proof and can withstand even that most tenacious of thieves. They can also be bolted to the floor or walls allowing computers to be left unattended in public areas and also providing ideal security for business and home users alike, protecting machines and more importantly the data they hold.

Fire and explosions are one of the leading causes of accidental death. Each year 4,000 people a year are killed in the US alone and a further 25,000 are left injured and often maimed or scarred for life.

Whilst fires and explosions have a multitude of causes, three things are always required: fuel, oxygen and a source of ignition. Fires start when a fuel (from paper in a litter bin to petrol in a fuel tank) is ignited by a spark and the following explosion/inferno is kept alive by the oxygen in the atmosphere.

Of course there is little we can do about the oxygen in the atmosphere but we can reduce the amount of combustibles lying around, making sure areas are swept clean of paper or litter, but what about sources of ignition?

Many fires are caused by faulty electrical equipment a spark or short from a circuit board can arc setting alight any combustible material it comes into contact with. We can of course make sure all electrical equipment is off before we leave the work place, but how practical is this? What about that old IBM workhorse that is left on overnight or the servers left humming in the back room?

A computer monitor left on overnight at a newspaper office in Virginia, as it had been for many years, was, although not in a particular hazardous area, responsible for completely gutting the offices of the Carolina Coast and Virginian-Pilot newspapers as the amount of newspaper lying around provided enough fuel to destroy over a decades’ worth of records.

Computers that work in particular hazardous environments, where there is a risk of explosion or fire, such as chemical factory, have to be sealed, ensuring any fault in the electrical equipment does not spark. However these systems are expensive, particularly when the IT has to be upgraded and the whole unit has to be discarded.

This is of course an impractical solution for those who work in environments not deemed a potential risk and many companies opt to save their money. However, these same companies spend thousands on anti-virus, spyware and firewall systems to keep their data safe from malicious hackers. However, if your entire computer (an perhaps office or factory) goes up in smoke, how safe is your data then?

There is a solution, for computers and other electrical equipment (including monitors, printers), in the shape of specialist industrial enclosures. These can be made from a variety of materials from food-grade stainless steel to cheaper plastic varieties. These enclosures can also protect equipment from knocks and bangs and some are even bomb-proof!

If you have a machine left on overnight or perhaps out in the warehouse amongst the dust and dirt – perhaps an enclosure could save you the time and trouble of not only replacing your data and computer but perhaps the entire building!

Computers are now part and parcel of every business and allow us to perform tasks in a fraction of the time than it would have done years before. However, there are downsides and while most IT systems can seem innocuous, in certain environments they can be a potential hazard.

A spark is normally the cause for most explosions, especially when electronic equipment is used in a volatile environment. Wherever a circuit is broken or near to another conductor, it causes a short and electric currents can arc through the air, igniting any nearby combustibles.

At the end of 2005, an electrical fault at one of the world’s leading computer research centres at the University of Southampton; started a fire that would lead to £50 million-worth of damage. It took over a hundred firefighters ten hours to bring the eventual blaze under control and whilst it was fortunate that there were no fatalities, 300 staff and research students found they had nowhere to work. The University have just reopened in a new £70 million building but other companies are not as fortunate - nearly half of all businesses that are closed by a fire never reopen and a third of those that do so, still fail in the following three years.

The law under EU’s ATEX directive does order companies to identify any potential hazardous areas into zones and all computer equipment has to be able to operate safely in those environments. Although many of these areas are easily identifiable such as where liquid fuels, flammable gases and explosives are stored; explosions and fires can also occur under less obvious conditions, such as where there is a lot of dust or particles suspended in the air. Even areas not deemed hazardous can be at risk from malfunctioning computer equipment, particularly when machines are left unattended or switched on for long periods of time. Like the computer monitor at the newspaper office in Virginia, that was left on overnight and sparked. Whilst not in a particular hazardous area the amount of newspaper lying around provided enough fuel to completely gut the offices of the Carolina Coast and Virginian-Pilot newspapers destroying decades’ worth of records.

Of course there have always been solutions to these problems, you can makes sure the area is swept clean every night but can you be sure a monitor hasn’t been left on and a pile of papers left nearby? Of course specially designed, intrinsically safe computers are widely used in highly hazardous areas, but these are expensive particularly in areas where explosions are deemed unlikely and there is a need for several machines. While it is certainly better to be safe than sorry the cost can be crippling, especially if you have to keep upgrading your IT.

However, lower-priced alternatives to the conventional intrinsically safe and air-purged computer systems exist and enables you to use existing PCs and monitors and provides protection specifically in ATEX Workplace Directive’ Zone 2, or areas where explosions, although deemed unlikely, could briefly occur. This allows companies the freedom to keep using their conventional IT and replace and upgrade it as necessary - whilst still keeping the same enclosure. It also enables piece of mind for those machines that although not in specific hazardous areas are often left unattended.

RAM or Random Access Memory is critical to gaming

laptops. Mainly because the more RAM you have on

your laptop or computer, the higher the performance

probably the most vital element you will have in

enough money, so too you can't have enough RAM.

The more the merrier. The more RAM you have, the

faster your computer will perform.

Most serious gamers know their RAM. They know the

difference between static and dynamic RAM. Many can

even tell you how SIMM, DIMM and SO-DIMM memory modules

are different from each other. Plus, they would all

know the importance of VRAM or VideoRAM to the operation

of their gaming laptop. Most of all, they know their

Graphics Cards or GPUs (Graphics Processing Units).

First, you should realize, RAM is probably the best

known form or type of computer memory. Second, RAM

is very important in how well your computer can

perform the tasks you call upon it to do. The more

RAM you have, the more computer tasks and programs

you can run at one time.

Nor should you make the mistake that only gamers

are concerned about getting enough RAM; professionals

who work with heavy graphics such as video editors,

architects, layout artists, website designers...

are also keenly aware of the importance of having

enough RAM to get the job done.

Keep in mind, computer technology is advancing at

a blistering rate and is constantly changing.

Overseeing all these industry standards and

technology is JEDEC, which acts like a regulating

body for the semiconductor industry. Hey, someone

has to keep track of all these forms of RAM!

Basically, you have two kinds of RAM - Static

RAM (SRAM) which is faster and more expensive

than Dynamic RAM (DRAM). Just as their names

suggest, Dynamic RAM is constantly refreshing

and is slower and less expensive than Static RAM.

Static RAM is primarily used for cache such

in your CPU's speed-sensitive cache.

What confuses most people is the whole range

or types of Dynamic RAM, with more in development

as we speak. Complicating the matter even further,

is the development of RAM for laptops which need

smaller and more compact memory modules.

Here are some types of RAM you may or may not have

seen or heard of:

FPM DRAM -- which stands for "Fast Page Mode Dynamic

Random Access Memory" and was the original form of

DRAM. It has a maximum transfer rate of approximately

176 MBps to L2 cache; and if you're wondering what

is level 2 cache, this is cache located outside the

processor chip. Level 1 refers to internal cache in

the processor.

EDO DRAM -- which stands for "Extended Data-out Dynamic

Random Access Memory" and is around 5% faster than

FPM DRAM. Transfer rate is at about 264 MBps to L2

cache.

SDRAM -- which stands for "Synchronous Dynamic Random

Access Memory" is very common in today's computers.

Transfer rate maxes out at around 528 MBps.

DDR SDRAM -- which stands for "Double Data Rate

Synchronous Dynamic RAM" is similar to SDRAM but

has higher bandwidth, allowing for greater speeds.

Transfer rate to L2 cache is around 1,064 MBps.

DDR2 SDRAM -- which stands for "Double-data-rate

Two Synchronous Dynamic RAM", operates the external

data bus twice as fast as DDR SDRAM.

DDR3 SDRAM -- which stands for "Double-data-rate Three

Synchronous Dynamic RAM" and is an improvement over

DDR2 SDRAM. DDR3 allows for chip capacities of 512

megabits up to 8 gigabytes, which gives you the maximum

memory module size of a whopping 16 gigabytes.

Faster RAM Is Better

It should be mentioned, usually the faster the RAM you

have in your gaming laptop - the better the performance

you will get.

Memory Modules

RAM modules are mounted on printed circuit boards

to be used in personal computers. First, you had SIMMs

(single in-line memory modules) which were gradually

replaced by DIMMs (dual in-line memory modules).

The main difference between them: SIMMs have a 32-bit

data path and DIMMs have a 64-bit data path. Now for

notebooks, you have SO-DIMMs (small outline dual in-line

memory modules) which are smaller and more compact memory

integrated circuits.

Of course, like everything in life, there are radically

different forms of RAM such as RDRAM which stands for

"Rambus Dynamic Random Access Memory". This was

designed by Rambus and has a high speed data bus

nicknamed the Rambus channel. Likewise, you had

Rambus in-line memory module (RIMM) and for laptops

you had SO-RIMM.

Graphics Card

Next you must know there is something called VRAM

or VideoRAM. This is a type of RAM is used for

video adapters or 3-D accelerators. VRAM is

located in the Graphics Card and is important

for high resolution and color depth, both

very essential for gamers. Since true multiport

VRAM is expensive, some Graphics Cards use SGRAM

(synchronous graphics RAM) instead because it is

cheaper. Other types of special high speed or

multi-port memory include WRAM, DDR2, GDDR3 and

GDDR4.

Your Graphics Card will be the heart of your

gaming machine. Most gamers go for the top

brands such as NVIDIA (GeForce) and ATI (Radeon)

- the higher number series card usually means

higher the performance. For example, at the

time of writing, Nvidia has released the

GeForce 9800 GX2, which is basically dual

GeForce 8800 GT in one card. This will also

give you DirectX 10 Graphics. Wait a couple

of months and there will probably be something

faster and more powerful on the market.

If one Graphics Card is good, then two or more

would be even better. That's why you have SLI

(Scalable Link Interface) technology which

allows for the linking of two or more video

cards together to get a single output.

PCI Express, is another expansion card interface

format which was introduced by Intel in 2004.

How Much RAM Do You Need?

As already mentioned, the more RAM you have,

the better your computer will run. You will

be able to perform more tasks and do them

faster if you have plenty of RAM. Actually,

upgrading your RAM to a higher level will

usually give you a whole new computer.

There are recommended minimum requirements

if you want to run certain programs or

operating systems on your PC or Laptop.

For running Windows XP, Microsoft recommends

128MB as the minimum RAM requirement, again

more is better.

For Mac OS X systems you will need a minimum

of 128 MB but for optimal performance try 512 MB.

Linux will work nicely on a system with only 4 MB

of RAM.

For Windows Vista - Microsoft recommends at

least 1Gig of RAM but many users have reported

that 2 to 3 Gigs of RAM makes Vista a much more

easier beast to handle. Vista probably needs all

the good press if can get.

For Gaming Laptops: How Much RAM?

Again the more the better, gaming laptops

need a lot of RAM since you have heavy video

graphics and images. Serious gamers usually

buy as much RAM as they can afford, choosing

There is no better feeling then ripping into the box of a new PC, at least not for me. You finally retired that old dinosaur and now have a steaming hot new computer with the latest technology and a nice looking LCD monitor. When doing a computer to computer transfer of files you have several options. Let’s say you don’t want any of your old programs or the user accounts. In this case you can simply burn your data to a DVD or CD and manually place them were you want on you new system. This works best for those who just want a fresh start and who don’t have a ton of files. Burning CD’s and DVD’s is not hard and they are cheap. Just to be sure you got every thing you should hold onto your old computer for a week or so.

If you want your user accounts and custom settings along with your files then you have to use software to do this. The good news is Windows has a built in program called the Easy Transfer Wizard that is 100% free. You got to love that. You have several different methods of transferring the data over to the new system. If you have a network setup then that is the easiest way. If not then an External storage device like a USB hard drive or data transfer cable would be the next choice. Then CD’s and DVD’s. The transfer Wizard is not all that hard to use but do expect it to take a while to do the transfer.

Now for a possible hang up. If you actually want to transfer over any programs then you will have to go out and purchase software to do this. If you have the software disks you can always just re-install the programs or re-buy them if they are really old versions.

In the world of Information Technology (IT) Management where acronyms and technologies seemingly reproduce exponentially, it is a necessity to be able to separate out the real important issues from the underlying noise. When it comes to monitoring, what really matters is the ability to drill through the noise and determine what in your business is either currently being affected, or what will become affected soon.

There are two basic types of monitoring, fault management (which uses a push model), and network management (which traditionally uses a pull model). Fault management systems use a push model and receive packets of information without requesting it in the form of SNMP Traps, Notifications, and Informs. The senders of this information (the various equipments located on the network), do so whenever they feel that there is something noteworthy, and especially when there is a problem that they are experiencing, whether it be something they themselves are undergoing or something that a neighbor may be reporting to them. One advantage of these fault systems is the breadth of information that is available, as well as the fact that the information simply comes to the SNMP manager. The disadvantage to these types of systems are that typically once the information is sent, it is “too late”, and the problem has already happened. It is generally a “reactive” type of monitoring. At this point, the network administrator or engineer must come to the rescue, either with software tools such as a MIB Browser or real hardware tools such as a screwdriver and a hard-drive.

Traditional Network management and monitoring systems use a pull model, and periodically (typically every 5 minutes), poll the systems in the network for specific statistics and information which may be used later on to correlate data or to run historical reports. The advantage of these types of systems is that they are “proactive”, and allow the admin to make decisions based on the statistics collected and the reports that they can run.

The combination of the fault and network monitoring allows an administrator to have a much more holistic view of the network. Advanced systems can do event correlation to match some of these real-time faults and SNMP traps with data collected from the polling engines, and then real-life business decisions can be made. For example, if a system determines by analyzing historical data that the amount of free space on a hard-disk has decreased more rapidly as of late, and there is a fault that comes in from the online ordering system stating that it cannot take orders online anymore, a correlation engine can determine that the reason may in fact be because the hard-disk has finally filled up and this is preventing the ordering system from fulfilling orders. An even better system would look at trends over time and send a message to a network administrator before the hard-disk fills up, telling them that they have just a couple of days left before this potential problem could happen.

In conclusion, network and fault management are two of the most crucial facets of your IT monitoring paradigm. There are other important facets of IT to manage, like applications and configuration, but both of these fall underneath the umbrella of network and fault in some cases as well. A really good correlation system must have at least basic configuration knowledge, including components of each system monitored as well as the connective and topological layout of the network and systems.

SNMP is a computer network protocol and stands for “Simple Network Management Protocol”. Of course, most network managers complain that it is anything but “simple”. This protocol is a method of communication that systems, routers, switches and other various network equipment running SNMP agents, use to transfer and broadcast critical information about their status, happenings on the network, and whatever else may be concerning them. Typically, these agents are listening on a couple different UDP ports, namely 161 for standard SNMP queries, and 162, for SNMP Traps. When a system sends an SNMP message in the form of a trap, it doesn’t matter which port it sends it out on, but because the remote listener is usually always listening on port 162, it must always send to 162. This is a reserved port for SNMP Traps in the list of assigned ports on the IANA website: (http://www.iana.org/assignments/port-numbers).

SNMP Traps are a crucial part of an entire network management solution. The traps utilize a push method of communication, i.e. they send unsolicited information to a network manager about themselves, in the form of an SNMP message called a Trap, Notification, or Inform. This information is then used by the manager to glean what possible happenings in the network can affect the business.

Fault management primarily consists of these traps, and because of that, it is a reactive type of technology. On the other hand, Performance management (a practice that does not capture traps), consists of polling or “proactive” monitoring, in which case a polling process contacts a list of agents in the manager’s configuration, talks to them on port 161, and queries these agents for information related to statistics that the manager is interested in. Both of these have their advantages and disadvantages, but what we want to talk about more here is the SNMP protocol and how it relates to these trap messages.

The Trap message has several different components. Here we will discuss only the SNMP version 1 trap. Please note that there are other versions, including version 2 and version 3, but that is beyond the scope of this article. The easiest way to see these components is to use a protocol analyzer (also known as a sniffer), and capture these SNMP messages on the wire. Once captured, the observer can see that the protocol data unit (PDU) is broken up into several parts, including the enterprise, agent address, generic and specific trap values, a time-stamp, and a list of variable bindings.

The Trap Enterprise field gives information in the format of an Object Identifier (OID), about the vendor of the equipment or agent that the trap originated from. This allows a network manager an easy way of looking up the information and cross-referencing with other events and/or faults. The agent address contains information about the originator (the sender) of the trap. This address, in the form of an Internet Protocol (IP) address, is not always from the sender, especially in the case that the trap was forwarded through an intermediary system. The Generic and Specific Type fields give the fault manager software an exact idea of the type of trap that is being sent. The timestamp specifies the exact time that this message was created and sent out on the wire. And finally, the variable-bindings include additional, detailed information that is specific to this event and that the manager can use to determine more about the event.

So, to sum up, the SNMP Trap PDU is not so simple, but luckily for us we have smart network monitoring programs and algorithms that know how to identify, decipher and act quickly on this information.

A GPS receiver then decodes the GPS signal sent from the antenna to a computer readable protocol which can be utilised by most time servers and operating systems including, Windows, LINUX and UNIX.

The GPS receiver also outputs a precise pulse every second that GPS Network Time Protocol (NTP) servers and computer time servers may utilise to provide ultra-precise timing. The pulse-per-second timing on most receivers is accurate to within 0.001 of a second of UTC.

GPS is ideal in providing NTP time servers or stand-alone computers with a highly accurate external reference for synchronisation. Even with relatively low cost equipment, accuracy of hundred nanoseconds (a nanosecond = a billionth of a second) can be reasonably achieved using GPS as an external reference.

Last month the first in the new NVIDEA 9000 series was launched. The GeForce 9600GT 512 Mb is the first of this new line that saw the light.

We tested the first sibling in this new range of graphics cards the 9600GT. In itself the fact the NVIDIA made the debut with the 9600GT model is unique. Mostly the high end super gaming monsters are the first to see the light. This is a middle class model but has is build around the new G94 GPU, and will be one of the few cards featuring this chip. Both the 9800GT and 9800GTX will be based on the G92 GPU.

The overall design is no revolution. Improvements in performance are great, and the price/quality ratio has gone up. But from a technical point of view there is not much new under the sun.

Both the G94 and G92 GPU's don't support DirectX 10.1 like their competitor Ati Radion with the 3000 series. If this lack of support is a great drawback remains to be seen. Their are no games supporting 10.1 and since the shelf life of a graphics card in the gaming sector is less than 6 months we need not be overcritical at this point.

Both GPU's support PCI 2.0 and Pure Video 2 ( we had already seen this in the G84 and G86). But the new cards are cheaper, faster and have a better energy efficiency.

Although the 9000 series is not the most innovative, fact remains that they are interesting cards. If we compare the new GT9600 with the GT8600 (based on the G84 GPU).

The 9600 stands out with an 256 bits memory bus, while the 8600 had to work with half that amount, 128 bits. That this increase has pronounced effect on the performance stands to reason.

Where the GeForce 8600 had a maximum bandwidth of 32GB/sec the 9600 is capable of 57.6 GB/sec. Further the number of shader processors is doubled compared to the GPU84.

The clock of the 64 unified shaders increased from 1450 Mhz, to 1625 Mhz. The conclusion of this move is that Nvidea now has found a healthy balans between GPU power and memory bandwidth.

The 9600GT has two Dual-Link DVI connections, both HDCP capable. Dell is the only manufacturer that has a display capable of utilizing that possibility with their 24 Inch 2408WP and 30 Inch 3008WFP. Other companies promised to come with compatible models later this year.

Decoding HD imagery is no problem, so blue ray enthusiasts can rest assured. The GT9600 can be placed in double SLI. and beats its competitor the HD 3870 from Ati Radeon on all fronts. Tripple SLI is not possible but we have the feeling that not many of the potential buyers of this card will be interested in such a feature.

A comparison table for different games and resolutions can be found on our site. A strange phenomenon is that the overall energy consumption of the HD3870 X2 is higher with less performance.

To wrap it up, we think that a complete new line in 6 months time is a bit overdoing it, but that NVIDIA did a good job with the Geforce 9600GT 512 Mb. The great never seen before price/performance ratio is the and the consistent beating of the 3870 from Ati makes this card a great choice for the demanding but not overly fanatic gamer.

These AA, C and D cells that power electronic toys and games, portable audio equipment and a wide range of other gadgets comprise 20% of the household hazardous materials present around the country in America's landfills.

Sealed inside these alkaline cells are harmful materials, which are not encountered by consumers during normal use. However, when the batteries enter a landfill, the casings can be crushed, or can easily degrade, which causes mercury and other toxins to leach into the environment.

While the chemicals contained in alkaline batteries do not pose nearly as large of a threat to the environment and public safety as other types, they are still a problem. The potassium hydroxide contained in the batteries can cause severe chemical burns if exposed to skin or mucus membranes.

Additionally, groundwater contamination can occur once the chemicals leak out of the batteries and eventually percolate through cracks in the landfill.

Alkaline batteries cannot be recycled, but they can still be disposed properly through special containers that hold only other alkaline batteries and are thus less likely to break open and leach into the ground.

The other types of batteries, even though they make up less than one percent of municipal solid waste (MSW), are a much larger problem. Nickel-Cadmium (NiCad), Lead-acid, Lithium-Ion, and any other type of battery that is not alkaline are very toxic to humans and to the environment. NiCad batteries are responsible for more than 75 percent of cadmium found in MSW.

Lead is a major contaminant of groundwater, and poses significant risks to human health such as brain damage.

In 1996 Congress passed the Mercury-Containing and Rechargeable Battery Management Act, which removed all barriers to facilitating a comprehensive recycling program for these batteries.

The problem of batteries in landfills is one of the easiest to solve. Using items that do not require batteries or at least rechargeable power can significantly reduce the number of batteries that end up in landfills.

There are a number of manufacturers in the country today who deal with products that do not require batteries, including mice. In buying a battery free mouse, you alone can save the environment from up to 300 throwaway batteries and the plastic materials that are used to package them.

I have spent some time thinking about how to make my portable computing smaller, easier and more efficient. In fact, I've even posted a few tips. However, as with most things related to the cyber world: the easier, more portable and convenient things get for the consumer, the easier and more convenient they become for the black hats and want to be hackers/crackers and others who wish to spoil our digital life.

Case in point is the most recent disturbing trend of hardrive, flash drive and compact flash cards that have preinstalled malware before they even reach your shopping bag. In fact, in some cases the bug riddled hardware may even be given away free at conferences. That free flash drive may cost you dearly, however. So, are the vendors biting the hand that feeds them? Probably not. However, insecure supply chains and retailer return policies that place opened, and sometimes infected hardware back on the shelves may be partially to blame.

So, what can you do to protect your valuable data assets? Here are a few of the tips I practice myself and recomend that clients consider:

Do not accept a freebie flash drive from anyone. Especially those who look out of place or not associated with a reputable vendor.

When connecting your new USB storage device, isolate the computer that you will connect it to from the rest of your network.

By the time the IDS detects an issue and notifies the appropriate network devices, the beginning of the infected traffic flow is already in the network.

In contrast, our Intrusion Prevention System (IPS) does sit in the middle of the traffic flow - in this case, the IPS will actually be our Cisco router. When the IPS detects a problem, the IPS itself can prevent the traffic from entering the network.

Cisco's website describes the IPS as a "restructuring" of the IDS. While you'll see more of IPS than IDS in today's real-world networks, we have to be crystal clear on the differences between the two for the ISCW exam. Make sure you’re comfortable with configuring IPS from the command line and by using SDM as well!

OEM Software - Is Cheap OEM Software Legal?
